Installing and Using LockDown Browser by Respondus with Wayground

Modified on Thu, 6 Nov at 1:54 PM

Common Assessments on Wayground can be set up to use LockDown Browser by Respondus, a secure testing tool that prevents students from accessing other apps, websites, or functions like copy, print, and screen sharing during an assessment.

This setting is optional and only applies if the Common Assessment creator turns it on.

For Common Assessment Creators

You can choose to require LockDown Browser when creating or editing a Common Assessment.

To enable LockDown Browser:

  1. Find the Common Assessment you are administering and click on it to go to the Common Assessment details page

  2. Turn on the Require LockDown Browser toggle

  3. (Optional) Add any tools to the Allowlisted Apps list if students should be able to use them during the test.

Tip: Create a short, non-graded practice assessment that uses LockDown Browser, so everyone can test their setup in advance.

You can read more in the Guide to Creating a Common Assessment.

Installation and Verification Guide

If LockDown Browser is required, it must be installed and tested on each device before assessment day.

For individual installation:

  1. Open the installation page: https://wayground.com/join/ldb-test

  2. Follow the instructions for your device.

On a Chromebook

  • Click on Install extension → Continue → Add to Chrome.

On Windows or Mac

  • Return to the installation page and click on 'Test' to verify that it works.

  • In the Assessment Dashboard, under the info/help (“i”) icon.

Common issues

1. LockDown Browser won’t launch or install
Use the Backup Link from your Emergency Guide. This lets the student take the test in a regular browser (only in urgent cases).

2. Browser is frozen or stuck
Give the student the Exit Password from your Emergency Guide.
They can click on the “i” or “x” icon in the top-left corner, choose
Proctor Exit, enter the password, and close the browser safely.
