Accommodations Available on Wayground

At Wayground, we understand that students thrive when their unique learning needs are met.

With Accommodations, you can quickly provide specific accommodations to groups of students in your class. By doing so, you'll save time by assigning the same task to your entire class while ensuring you offer compliant, scaffolded experiences for your students.

This article discusses the different Accommodations available on Wayground. To learn more about Accommodations and how to use them, look at Differentiate for Every Student’s Needs With Accommodations on Wayground

Basic Accommodations

  1. Extra Time for Questions
Available for Assessments/Quizzes, Interactive Videos, and Passages

With this, you can choose how much extra time your students get for each question. Students will get the regular time for each question plus the extra time you set. This way, students who need a bit of extra time get the chance to engage and participate fully in a session.

  2. Participant Attempts
Available for Assessments/Quizzes, Interactive Videos, and Passages

With this, you can select the number of attempts (up to 3) your students get for a session. After their initial try, they will see a 'Retry' button, enabling them to try a question again. This helps students learn better by giving them multiple chances to succeed.

  3. Read Aloud
Available for Assessments/Quizzes, Lessons, Interactive Videos, Passages, and Flashcards

The Read Aloud Accommodation activates text-to-speech functionality, which reads content aloud to students so they can benefit from auditory learning or have difficulty reading text independently.

    Note for Passages:
Only the questions and answer choices attached to a Passage will be read aloud. The content of the Passage itself is not read aloud, since it is part of assessing reading comprehension. This ensures students receive the right level of support while maintaining the integrity of reading-focused assessments.

  4. Extended Deadline

With this Accommodation, you can give students who need more time a flexible and fair way to complete their work without needing to adjust deadlines every time. Once enabled for a student, you can set a standing rule (like +2 days or 50% more time) that automatically applies to all future sessions where a due date is set.

If you ever change a session’s deadline for the whole class, the extended time for the accommodated student will adjust automatically. Students will discreetly see only their own updated deadline.

Question Settings

  1. Redemption Questions
Available for Assessments/Quizzes, Interactive Videos, and Passages

This Accommodation lets students try questions again if they answered them wrong the first time. It's like a do-over that helps students understand better. So, they get a chance to fix their mistakes and learn more effectively.

  2. Reduce Answer Choices
Available for Assessments/Quizzes, Lessons (only questions), Interactive Videos, and Passages

You can decrease the number of answer choices available to your students from the default set of options, allowing for two or three choices instead of the usual range. This simplifies the decision-making process for students, making it easier for them to select the correct answer.

  3. Hints
Available for Assessments/Quizzes — Supported Subjects: Math, Science, Social Studies, and ELA

With this Accommodation enabled, students will see subtle, expandable prompts (hints) that offer structured guidance without giving away the correct answer. These hints are auto-generated by AI and provide an additional layer of scaffolding to support learners who may need a little extra help.

As a teacher, you can preview these hints from the session settings page before assigning the session.

Hints appear seamlessly alongside other Accommodations like Dyslexia Font, Font Size, and Font Spacing, so your students get a personalized and supportive experience without disrupting the flow of the session.
Hints work seamlessly with other accommodations like Dyslexia Font, Font Size, and Font Spacing for a supportive experience.

  4. Speech to Text
Available for Assessments/Quizzes, Lessons, Interactive Videos, and Passages

The Speech-to-Text Accommodation allows students to respond to questions by recording an audio. This audio is then converted into text in real time, which would make participation easier for students who may find typing challenging. Students can still choose to type their answers directly if they prefer.

The feature follows a simple 'say it, check it, submit it' flow. Students can review and edit the generated transcript before submitting their response. Profanity filters are built in to ensure safe use.

Speech-to-Text works with Open-Ended, Fill-in-the-Blank, and Word Cloud question types, and is currently supported for responses only in English.

After the session, the recorded audio and live-generated transcript will appear in the report. These responses also work with AI evaluation rubrics if enabled.

Math Tools

  1. Desmos Scientific Calculator
Available for Assessments/Quizzes, Lessons, Interactive Videos, and Passages

Enabling this Accommodation allows your students to use the Desmos Scientific Calculator during a session. This would help students better understand mathematical concepts and use higher-level approaches to solving math problems. They can access this calculator by clicking on 'Tools' followed by the 'Graphing' option.

This will also apply to captions and transcripts in Interactive Video sessions (for videos from YouTube and Boclips).

  4. Font Size
Available for Assessments/Quizzes, Lessons, Interactive Videos, Passages, and Flashcards

  5. Font Spacing
Available for Assessments/Quizzes, Lessons, Interactive Videos, Passages, and Flashcards

This will also apply to captions and transcripts in Interactive Video sessions (for videos from YouTube and Boclips).

Learning Environment

  1. Don’t Show Leaderboard
Available for Assessments/Quizzes, Interactive Videos, and Passages

When you activate this Accommodation for a group of students, they won't see the leaderboard after each question on their screens. This helps students focus solely on answering questions without the distraction of constantly seeing their peers' scores. Hides the leaderboard to reduce distractions and help students focus on learning.

  2. Turn Off Sound Effects
Available for Assessments/Quizzes, Lessons, Interactive Videos, Passages, and Flashcards

With this setting turned on, students won't hear any background music while participating in a Wayground session. They also won't hear the sounds that play when they answer a question correctly or incorrectly. This helps create a quieter environment for students who might find music distracting, allowing them to concentrate better.

  3. Enhanced Display Mode
Available for Assessments/Quizzes, Interactive Videos, and Passages

When you enable this Accommodation, students will automatically see a simplified, distraction-free interface with either a high contrast (Light Mode) or low contrast (Dark Mode) theme applied at the start of the session. Sound effects like countdown and answer feedback sounds will be turned off by default.

Visual effects like confetti and the animations that appear after answering a question correctly or incorrectly won’t be shown. The Qbit character will be hidden, and the join code will no longer be visible in the top-right corner of the screen.

Students will only be able to switch between the Light and Dark Mode themes, both of which have a more serious tone and use a single color for all option boxes.

Accommodations Exclusively for Lessons

  1. Notes to Refer
    Available for Lessons

When you enable this Lesson-specific Accommodation, students can access a separate tab with all lesson slides. Here, they can view all the lesson slides with all the annotations and notes created during the session.

They can access this tab by clicking on the 'Tools' button followed by the 'Notes to refer' option.

This feature is particularly helpful for students who may find it overwhelming to take notes while following along in a teacher-paced lesson. With Notes to Refer, students can review previous slides at their own pace, revisit important details, and use these references when answering questions. They can also save and download these notes for future use and have ongoing access to essential lesson content.

  2. Reading Mode
    Available for Lessons

This Lesson-specific Accommodation makes reading the content on slides easier for students. When you turn this Accommodation on for a student, the slides in a lesson will be represented in a distraction-free and reading-friendly mode.

This will help students with visual challenges by making reading more accessible and tailored to their needs, so they can focus better on learning.

If Accommodations such as Translate, Dyslexia Font, Font Spacing, and Font Size are enabled for a student in addition to 'Reading Mode', the accommodated text will be visible in the reading mode section.

✨  Your class will not be made aware that unique experiences are enabled for some students. Everyone learns together, feeling included and supported.
