Quick answers to the questions teachers and administrators ask most about the Wayground AI Chrome Extension. For step-by-step help, see the feature articles linked throughout; for fixes, see Troubleshooting the Wayground AI Chrome Extension.
Getting started
What is the Wayground AI Chrome Extension?
A Chrome extension that lets teachers turn the content they already use (YouTube videos, Google Docs, PDFs, ChatGPT responses, articles, and more) into Assessments, Flashcards, and Passages. It also gives AI feedback on student Google Docs and grades Google Classroom assignments. Everything runs in a Chrome side panel.
Is it free?
The extension installs free from the Chrome Web Store and signs in with your Wayground account.
Do I need a separate account?
No. Most teachers sign in with the school Google account that's already linked to Wayground. There's nothing separate to set up.
Can students use it?
No. The extension is for teachers only. Student accounts are detected and blocked with a "For Teachers Only" message.
Browser and device support
Which browsers does it work in?
Google Chrome. The extension is built for Chrome and uses Chrome's side panel. Other browsers (Edge, Brave, Firefox, Safari) aren't supported.
Which devices and operating systems?
Chrome on Chromebooks (ChromeOS), Mac, and Windows. On school-managed devices, an administrator can install it for you; on personal devices you can install it yourself.
Does it work on mobile?
Mobile browser support isn't documented. The extension is designed for desktop Chrome.
Using the extension
Where do my created resources go?
Everything you create is saved automatically to your Wayground library. Use View on Wayground in the side panel to open any resource, or find them all later in your library.
What can I create, and from where?
Assessments, Flashcards, Passages, Interactive Videos (from YouTube), and Presentations (from Google Slides). Sources include YouTube, Google Docs, Slides, Forms, Drive files, PDFs, ChatGPT/Gemini/Claude responses, selected text, PhET, and most articles. See Create Assessments, Flashcards, and Passages From Anywhere for the full list.
Can I edit what the AI creates?
Yes. The side panel is for quick review; click View on Wayground to open the full editor, where you can reword, add or remove questions, change answers, and more.
What languages can it generate in?
Resources default to English and can be generated in 16 languages total: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Filipino, Hindi, Malay, Thai, Vietnamese, Polish, French, German, Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Japanese, and Korean. (This sets the language of the generated content; the extension's own menus are in English.)
Does feedback I add to a student's Google Doc look like it came from AI?
No. Accepted comments are added as margin comments authored by you, in the voice and style you chose. See Give AI Feedback on Student Google Docs.
When I grade in Classroom, do students see the grades right away?
No. Grades post to Classroom as drafts. Students only see them when you return the work in Google Classroom. See Grade Google Classroom Assignments with Wayground.
Does it work with Canvas, Schoology, or Moodle?
Google Classroom is the LMS the extension integrates with: grading, rosters, and draft grades. Canvas, Schoology, and Moodle aren't supported.
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
There are no global keyboard shortcuts. Inside the flashcard viewer, click a card to flip it and use the arrow keys to navigate.
Sign-in and sessions
How does sign-in work?
You sign in with your Google account, which is linked to Wayground. The extension checks your sign-in each time you open the panel.
Will I get logged out if I step away?
There's no idle timeout that logs you out mid-task. If your session does expire, you'll see "Session expired. Please sign in to Wayground again". Just sign in once more.
Why is Chrome asking for Google permissions?
The first time you use a feature that reads a Google Doc or your Classroom data, Chrome asks you to authorize that Google access. It's a one-time prompt per type of access. If you dismiss it, the feature will ask again.
Can I sign in with Microsoft, Clever, or ClassLink?
Sign-in through the extension uses your Google-linked Wayground account. Other sign-in methods aren't documented for the extension.
Privacy and data
The following reflects Wayground's school/district deployment documentation. For the full picture your district needs, see the admin deployment guide.
Is it FERPA and COPPA compliant?
Yes. Wayground's deployment documentation states the product is FERPA compliant and COPPA compliant.
Is student data used to train AI?
No. Per Wayground's documentation, vendors are contractually prohibited from training on student content.
Where is data stored, and how long is student work kept?
Data is stored in the US (AWS). Student submission content is deleted within 72 hours of processing.
Is data sold or shared? Is browsing history collected?
No to both. Wayground's documentation states data is not sold or shared, and browsing history is not collected.
What about the integrity checker?
Integrity checks use Pangram, which (per Wayground's documentation) does not train on your content or sell data, and is only engaged when you open an integrity check. See Pangram's policy.
Where's the privacy policy and DPA?
The privacy policy is at wayground.com/privacy. A Data Processing Agreement (DPA) is available on request.
Limits
How long can a screen recording be?
Up to 26 minutes and up to 500 MB. See Record Your Screen Into a Lesson (Beta).
Is there a length requirement for selected text?
Yes. Selected text needs to be between 100 and 10,000 words. A selection is also held only briefly (about 60 seconds) before it clears, so create your resource promptly after highlighting.
Can a document be too long to process?
Yes. Very long sources are trimmed before processing, and an extremely long document may return a "too large" message. Use a shorter document or split it up.
Is there a limit on integrity checks?
Yes. There's a weekly cap on integrity checks, and the panel always shows how many checks remain this week.
How much history does the panel keep?
Your 50 most recent created resources and your 50 most recent grading sessions are available from the panel.
Does it work offline?
No. All AI features need an internet connection.
Updates and support
How do I update the extension?
You don't; it updates automatically through Chrome.
