Wayground’s live session modes help you create interactive and engaging experiences in class. You can set the pace yourself or let students move through questions on their own.
When you start a live session, you can choose between two options:
- Teacher-Led: You control when everyone moves to the next question in the session.
- Student-Paced: Students go through the session at their own pace. This mode includes several dynamic modes that give you the flexibility to run anything from a competitive quiz game to a formal assessment.

What is Teacher-Led mode?
Teacher-led mode allows you to control the pace of the session so that all students advance from one question to the next together. This mode is ideal for synchronous learning environments as it ensures that all students focus simultaneously on the same content.
This is particularly useful in subjects where guided instruction and real-time feedback are crucial, such as during a math lesson where solving steps are reviewed collectively.
Teacher-led mode is available for sessions with Assessments/Quizzes and Interactive Videos.
Lessons in live mode (when you click 'Start now') are teacher-led by default.
Paper Mode (Under Teacher-led Mode)
Teacher-led mode also consists of Paper Mode. Paper Mode is a live session mode that enables you to drive engagement and support every student by blending physical and digital learning. With Paper Mode, you can bring Wayground into your classroom even if not all your students have personal devices.
To conduct an Assessment/Quiz in Paper Mode, project the questions on your computer. Your students can attempt these questions by holding up personalized QR Codes. Scan these codes using the Wayground mobile app to record their attempts.

What is Student-paced mode?
Student-paced mode is a collection of dynamic session modes where learners move through the session at their own pace. It does not mirror the teacher’s screen. Instead, students work within the set session duration while teachers monitor their live progress.
It includes five dynamic modes:
- Classic mode
- Mastery Peak
- Test mode
- Team mode
Classic Mode
Available with Assessments/Quizzes, Interactive Videos, and Passages
In Classic Mode, students progress at their own pace while you can view a live leaderboard with real-time results. This mode is ideal for assessments as it allows students to engage deeply with the material without time constraints.
In addition to the usual session settings, Classic Mode includes the Strike and Shield feature — an exciting player-vs-player gameplay experience.

Mastery Peak Mode
Available with Assessments/Quizzes
In this mode, students answer questions as they make their way to the top of a mountain. Mastery Peak combines spaced repetition with gamification to create an engaging and motivating learning experience.
Students aim to reach an accuracy goal by reattempting questions they previously got wrong. Along the way, they can use Power-Ups and complete challenges by playing mini games.

Test Mode
Available with Assessments/Quizzes, Interactive Videos, and Passages
Test Mode is designed for formal assessments. It provides a no-frills setup that minimizes distractions and helps ensure students focus solely on the questions. This makes it ideal for accurately measuring understanding and performance.
Team Mode
Available with Assessments/Quizzes and Interactive Videos
Team Mode encourages healthy competition and collaboration. Students answer at their own pace, and their performance contributes to the team’s collective score.
Teachers can edit teams to suit classroom needs, making this mode perfect for fostering teamwork and collaborative learning while maintaining individual accountability.
